Using the Hormones in Your Body and Food to Help achieve Weight Loss
We are hearing a lot about people taking hormones for weight loss, building muscle and increasing performance. Many of these hormones are prescription strength and can have dangerous side effects. Dr. Fred Schofield, of Atlas Chiropractic in Northwest Phoenix, has three simple steps to promote your body’s natural hormones without dangerous hormone prescriptions.
Slowing Down the Hunger Hormone Ghrelin
You may have heard a million times that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it is true. When you wake up in the morning you have been fasting all night. This causes the hunger hormone, ghrelin, to be high. The ghrelin level can easily be lowered by starting off the morning with a high protein breakfast. Some examples of high protein breakfast options are: whey protein shake, veggie omelet or green juice or smoothie with Chlorella or Spirulina. Lack of sleep can also increase ghrelin.
Leptin: The Body’s Weight Loss Hormone
Leptin is the body’s weight loss hormone. Leptin is a natural appetite suppressor that tells your brain that you are full. As you age, the body does not use leptin as well as it used to. Leptin use can be supported by taking Omega-3’s, Chlorella and Spirulina. Wild mackerel, salmon and sardines are a good dietary source of leptin. Also, if you do not get enough sleep your leptin levels decrease.
Cortisol: The Belly FAT Producer
Cortisol is your body’s belly fat producer. When the body is under stress it produces Cortisol. Cortisol causes fat to be deposited around the mid-section creating belly fat. Caffeine stimulates cortisol, so if you are under stress and drink three cups of coffee a day you are likely to gain belly fat.
Dr. Fred Schofield’s Healthy Hormone and Weight Loss Plan
Here is Dr. Fred’s simple plan. Start the morning off with a high protein breakfast, but also supplement with Chlorella and Spirulina three times per the day. Chlorella and Spirulina work great as a between meal snack at 10am and 3pm. Reduce your stress level. Go on vacations, take Yoga or Tia Chi and practice daily prayer/meditation. Drink water instead of coffee and add Spirulina to your water. Sleep without electronics, cell phones or TV in your room, no visible lights, or noises. If you need to set an alarm clock to wake up you need to go to bed earlier. Make sure you are getting enough sleep.
